About / Bio Sharif Abd El Mawla (1986) grew up in Amsterdam and studied Media & Culture at the University of Amsterdam. His early work is grounded in socially relevant themes and realistic storytelling, which reflects both his background and academic sensitivity.
In 2017 Sharif directed the short film ‘7 Moroccans & Jos’ which premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival and was recognized as the surprise of the year by programmer Claire van Daal. Two years later he directed ‘Jet Ski’, a second short film that earned a nomination for Best Dutch Short Film in the Live Action category at Cinekid. In 2019 he was selected for NFF Talent En Route, a development trajectory for promising filmmakers.
Shifting toward longer narratives, Sharif released his short feature ‘Casting Call’ on NPO in 2024. The film was selected for the Dutch Film Festival 2024 and marked his continued growth in storytelling and directing.
With a focus on socially engaged stories and emerging talent in Dutch film, Sharif Abd El Mawla continues to develop distinct, thoughtful work that resonates with national audiences and festival programmers alike.
