Jan Hulst

About / Bio Jan Hulst (1987) is an Amsterdam born and raised and based director and writer, trained at the Amsterdam Theatre School. He developed a distinctive style marked by sharp language, strong visuals, and a blend of humor with serious social themes. His work connects through irony and emotional depth, engaging a broad and diverse audience.

Since 2015, Hulst has worked closely with Kasper Tarenskeen as the duo ‘Hulst & Tarenskeen,’ creating plays for venues like Frascati Amsterdam, Theater Oostpool, and Het Nationale Theater. In 2020, they won the Erik Vos Prize for exceptional new talent, with critics praising their clear directing and compelling use of language.

Alongside this, Hulst collaborates with Jim Deddes on ‘JOARDY FILM’, a popular YouTube series with over 35,000 subscribers. Their web series ‘JOARDY SEASON 1’ (VPRO) won the Silver Nipkow Award in 2019. They also launched the podcast AT6 – The Real Sound of Amsterdam in 2022.

In addition, Hulst directs independently, including the theatre debut of HANG YOUTH frontman Abel van Gijlswijk and JOARDY SHOW. Jan is excited to explore new genres, always bringing his own unique style and flavour. Hulst is steadily establishing himself as a fresh and influential voice in Dutch theatre and media.
